Who can use an online notary?
It’s a question we get often. The answer: Anyone!

If you’re currently in New York State, you can have your document notarized online.
If you’re currently in the U.S. but not New York State, you can have your document notarized online.
If you’re currently outside of the U.S., you can have your document notarized online.
If you are a New York State resident, you can have your document notarized online.
If you are not a New York State resident, you can have your document notarized online.
Even if you’re not a U.S. citizen, you can have your document notarized online!

Here’s the stipulation: The document being notarized needs to be filed with or related to a matter subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, or it has to involve property located in the territorial jurisdiction of the United State.

In our case, since our Notaries are commissioned in New York State, these rules need to hold true to not just the United States, but New York State specifically.

The good news is, you typically won’t need to create the document you need notarized. This means your lawyer, employer, or whomever is giving you the document will be able to confirm with you how and where you can go about notarizing your document.

Conclusion: If your document is regarding New York State, you can have your document notarized remotely (online)!
Not all states allow for online notarization. Check here for the current list: https://www.nass.org/initiatives/remote-electronic-notarization
